Wood Care Instructions

Natural wooden items take a little bit of extra love, but caring for them is simple and well worth it! Properly cleaning and maintaining your wood products is key to their lifespan and will bring out their beauty by enhancing the natural wood grain.

Did you know that natural wood products will expand and shrink when exposed to different temperatures and humidity levels, and can fade or discolor when placed in direct sunlight?

Here are some of our best tips for keeping your wood products looking beautiful:

 General Wood Care

  • Store wood products indoors in a temperature-controlled environment where the air humidity is between 40–60%.

  • Do not place them directly in front of a heat source, such as a fireplace, radiator, heater, etc., or a cooling source, such as an air conditioner.

  • Avoid direct exposure to bright sunlight. Do not place directly in front of a window.

  • Keep surface clean and wipe up any liquid spills as quickly as possible.

  • Do not use sharp objects directly on the wood surface.

  • Do not place beverages directly on the wood surface. Use coasters.

  • Allow the wood to “breathe” and do not cover it with plastic or other air-tight materials for an extended period of time.

Furniture Cleaning and Maintenance

  •  Clean wood surfaces with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.

  • If cleaned with a damp cloth, be sure to dry the surface with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth after.

  • To keep the wood sealed and maintain the original color, reapply a coat of Walrus Oil Furniture Wax as needed.

Kitchenware Cleaning and Maintenance

Wooden kitchenware items take a little bit of extra love, but it is simple and well worth it! Properly cleaning and maintaining your wood products is key to their lifespan and will bring out their beauty by enhancing the natural wood grain.

  • Never put your wood products in the dishwasher.

  • Never let your wood products soak in water or with wet ingredients.

  • Wash your wooden items in warm (not hot) water with a mild dish washing soap (like our natural dishwashing bar soap!).

  • Towel dry immediately or allow to air-dry completely on a dishrack or other location with good airflow.

  • Once completely dry, check to see if the wood is beginning to fade or feel rough. If so, reapply a thin coat of Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil and/or Wax.

  • Allow to sit overnight to allow the oil/wax to soak in and cure.

  • If you find that the item feels waxy after sitting, you can lightly buff it with a dry cotton cloth to remove the waxy feel.
